Chilled beers for the win!!

On a late summer evening in Sengkang the stage was set for the hotly anticipated battle between the Tornadoes and SCC. With two eskies full of chilled beers (graciously supplied by Ferg and WWB) and an immense post match social with karaoke on the agenda, Nadoes were geared up for an excellent night of Hockey and festivities.

The first quarter was closely matched between the two teams with both not really getting any significant opportunities within the D.

In the second quarter the main action came from the umpire’s pocket, as two Nadoes were Green carded for separate offences. Some further selective umpiring decisions started to raise temperatures from the dug out and supporters. This caused some unnecessary distractions to the game and SCC started to take advantage and apply pressure to the defense. Luckily the back line was well structured and up to the task under the command of the returning Nadoes stalwart Jonny Mayes. When SCC did eventually get some opportunities at goal, the goalie (Ollie Wood) pulled out some igneous rock solid saves that left the first half tied 0-0.

After an inspiring half time team talk from coach Salan, Nadoes got off to a flying start in the third quarter. With some fast attacking runs down the flanks, finally lead to an eventual short corner. Up to the plate stepped debutante Lionel Sumner and with a clean push out and trap, he sent the ball whistling between the SCC goalie's helmet and flailing glove. Nadoes kept the pressure up and it wasn’t long before they were awarded another short and it was the turn of Tim Headley who fired a low flick to the right, knee capping the SCC defender on the post. Nadoes kept the pressure mounted, but the score held at the break.

In the final quarter it was SCC’s turn take the initiative and to ramp up the pressure, not helped by another two unnecessary Green cards shown to Nadoes (bringing the tally to 4), brought some tense final moments to the game. However, SCC were unable to convert some golden opportunities and the score remained 2-0.

An excellent team performance (with the man of the match going to 4 people!) and a great win to provide some momentum for Tornados season. The post match celebrations lead to a very enjoyable and messy night in town...
