Tornados Men and Women compete at the famous SCC international 6's tournament

After a five year hiatus, last weekend Tornados HC had two teams represent the club at the SCC international 6's tournament. Both teams performed fantastically with the Men finishing in third place for the tournament and the Women coming home with the top prize of gold medals and the SCC 6's cup!

Both teams fought through the weather and played the most attractive Hockey possible in the boggy conditions. The Men secured a second place finish in their group and the Women went undefeated to top their group in style, meaning both teams would compete for the top prize of the Cup against the best teams at the tournament.

The Men went into the second day a little worse for wear after some stunning dance moves and responsible decisions on the Saturday night, but still found form against some tough opposition from Japan, Australia, and Malaysia to reach the semi-finals. In the Semis the Men faced a fit and skilful Japanese team in Sashimi Club, who took a first half lead in a tightly contested affair. As the rain started to fall in the second half, Tornados began to produce chances but couldn't convert and eventually ran out of time, losing 1-0 to the nicest team anyone has ever faced and most peoples favourite team of the weekend. Sashimi club went on to put on a show in the final and despite losing 1-0 to the Australian champions, took the hearts of the rest of the tournament home with them.

The Women had a comfortable first day, scoring freely and dominating their group, even with some accidental break dancing from Sophie Pollock in the mud. The second day started off with a shaky game, going all the way to a shoot-out, but the girls held their nerve and moved on to the next round where they found their form from the previous day and began to dispatch teams at will once again. In the final Tornados lined up against the Ducks Chicks, an Australian team that happened to have picked up our winners trophy and medals from five years ago....small world. The game was one for the neutral fans, end to end, spectacular goals, and had every Tornados supporter shaking with nerves. After normal time and extra time the teams couldn't be separated at 2-2, so another shootout was required. No nerves on the pitch as a master class from Tornados (in particular goalkeeper Min) saw them win the shootout 2-0 and finish the tournament undisputed and undefeated champions!

Thanks to Singapore Cricket Club for putting on a great event, we look forward to defending our title next year!
